Charlie Wilson – passed from this life into eternal life on July 10th. Charlie was a modern renaissance man in many, many ways. He was learned and committed to learning for the entirety of his life. He was an entrepreneur exploring and developing many businesses with his partner and wife, Sue. He was passionate about good wine and good food and loved to cook. He had musical talents, speaking talents, and an exceptionally wry humor. All of these talents, experiences, and skills made Charlie an amazing person.
But, to be clear, Charlie was most elevated and energized when talking about his love for his wife, his family, and his God. Words would not do justice when describing Charlie’s commitment to love and service – so I won’t try.
As his time here grew short, Charlie drafted a very special prayer. His prayer was shared as the celebration of his life and I now share it with you:
“Prayer for Old Men
Gracious God, you have given me all that I am and now I give it all back to you. I dedicate these, my final years, to you.
You have called me into old age, a call not given to all. I humbly ask that your loving grace sustain me in each aspect of my struggles at this time in my life.
As my vision weakens, may the eyes of my faith strengthen that I may see you and your love in in everything and everyone.
As my hearing fails, may the ears of my heart be more attentive to the whisper of your gentle voice.
As my legs weaken, may I walk faithfully in your path.
As my mind becomes less alert and my memory fades, may I remain peaceful and secure in you . . . always aware that you are with me.
Should sickness overtake me, may I know peace and comfort through you.
As my heart slows, may it expand in love for you and all your people. May it rest in you until I am with you completely and forever.
Amen”
I was blessed to know Charlie Wilson for more than thirty years. He was my mentor, my spiritual guide, and most of all – Charlie Wilson was my friend.
Please allow us to serve you and those you love.
Thank you,
Gene
P.S. Perhaps today is the day you write a prayer of your very own. Heaven knows our world needs more prayers.
